Convert PDF to Excel

Add a PDF and download its tables as an Excel file, with each column in its own column and numbers you can add up. The work happens on your device: nothing is uploaded.

Your files are processed on this device, and nothing is uploaded. Once the tool has finished your first file, it keeps working in airplane mode. Check it yourself

How to convert PDF to Excel

  1. Tap "Choose a PDF" or drop it onto the box.
  2. Check the preview of the first rows, and choose one sheet per page or all pages in one sheet.
  3. Tap "Download Excel file (.xlsx)", or "Download CSV", and open it in Excel, Google Sheets, LibreOffice or Numbers.

Good to know

This works with typed PDFs: price lists, reports, invoices, statements and schedules made by a program or downloaded from a website. Tables drawn with lines keep their cells, merged cells included; tables without lines are worked out from the gaps between the columns. Text around the tables comes along too, line by line.

Numbers become real numbers in Excel, shown the way the PDF showed them: 1,234.56 stays 1,234.56, amounts in brackets stay negative and percentages stay percentages, so they add up, sort and work in formulas. Numbers written as 1.234,56, as in much of Europe, Latin America and Indonesia, are recognized too. Account numbers and codes that start with a zero stay as text, so no digits are lost.

With "All pages in one sheet", a table that runs over several pages becomes one long table, with its heading row once. Scanned PDFs are pictures of pages, with no typed text inside, and the tool tells you when a PDF looks scanned. To read a scan, make it searchable first with Make PDF searchable (OCR, which reads text from a picture), then use this tool.

Questions

Will the columns come out right?

For most typed tables, yes: each column of the PDF becomes a column in Excel. A PDF only records where each piece of text sits, so the columns are worked out from the lines and gaps on the page. Check the preview, and the totals, before you rely on them.

Are the numbers real numbers?

Yes. Amounts, quantities and percentages go into Excel as numbers, so you can add them up, sort them and use them in formulas. Dates, phone numbers and codes that start with a zero stay as text.

Can it convert a scanned PDF?

Not directly. A scan holds pictures of text, not text, and the tool tells you when a PDF looks scanned. To read a scan, make it searchable first with Make PDF searchable (OCR, which reads text from a picture), then use this tool.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Your browser reads it and writes the spreadsheet on your device, so private documents such as statements and price lists stay with you.

Does it work with Google Sheets?

Yes. The .xlsx file opens in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets (upload it to Google Drive, then open it), LibreOffice Calc and Apple Numbers. The CSV file opens in almost any spreadsheet or accounting program.

Does it work with a password-protected PDF?

Remove the password first with Unlock PDF (you need to know the password), then convert the unlocked copy.
