Edit the text in a PDF

Open a PDF, click a line of its text and type the new words. They are written in the line’s own font, size and color, and the old words are taken out of the file, not just covered up. Your PDF stays on your device: nothing is uploaded.

How to edit the text in a PDF

  1. Tap "Open a PDF" or drop it onto the box. The Edit text bar opens under the toolbar.
  2. Click or tap the line you want to change. A box opens with its words.
  3. Type the new words and tap Change. The page shows the change straight away, and Undo takes it back.
  4. Tap "Download" to save the changed PDF.

Good to know

Only what you change is redrawn. The words before your change stay exactly as they were, the new words are drawn in the line’s own font, size and color, and the rest of the line moves along to make room. A wide gap, such as a tab or the next column of a table, stays where it is.

The old words are taken out of the page itself, so they can’t be found, selected or copied afterwards. The whole PDF is written anew, so they aren’t kept in an earlier version inside the file either.

A PDF often keeps only the letters it uses. If the line’s font lacks some letters of your new words, those words are written in the standard font most like it, and the tool tells you.

Up to 3 changed lines per PDF are free. Plus and Enterprise change as many as they need.

Text that is part of a picture, such as a scanned page, can’t be changed: it isn’t text in the PDF. Right-to-left writing, such as Arabic or Hebrew, can’t be changed here yet.

Any change breaks a digital signature on the PDF, and the tool warns you when a PDF is signed. A PDF that needs a password to open can’t be changed here: remove the password with Unlock PDF first, and Protect PDF can add it again afterwards.

Questions

Will the new words look like the rest of the page?

Yes, as long as the line’s font has their letters: they are written in the same font, size and color, and a word you only change keeps the style it had (a bold red word stays bold and red). Letters the PDF doesn’t carry are written in the standard font most like the line’s, and the tool tells you when that happens.

Are the old words really gone?

Yes. They are taken out of the page’s text, not covered with a white box, and the PDF is written anew. So they can’t be selected, searched or copied, or found in an earlier version inside the file.

Can I change a whole paragraph?

One line at a time. A line that gets longer pushes the rest of that line along, but the lines under it don’t move. For a bigger change, change a few words in each line.

Can I change the text of a scanned PDF?

No. A scan is a picture of each page, so it has no text to change. Fill & sign PDF can put new text on top of it instead.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is changed by your browser on your device.
